About

IMG_3877Pet Dentistry operate from OurVets St Albans Vet Clinic  in Christchurch.

My name is Janine van Dam and I live in St Martins, Christchurch with my husband, three children, three Flemish Giant rabbits and eight free range guineapigs. I graduated from Massey University with a BVSc in 1997,  and worked as a general vet for many years in New Zealand, Australia and England. I attained my Membership in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery from the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in July 2016.

I am passionate about animal dentistry and it is my aim to educate pet owners about dental health and also to help veterinarians provide the best dental care to their clients that is available.

I am also concerned about climate change and the state of our planet and want to do my part in helping the environment. I cycle to work when possible on my electric bike, and in 2023,2024 and 2025 Pet Dentistry donated 30 native trees via Trees that Count ($300 each year – 90 trees in total) to be planted in Canterbury.

I am a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. I have worked solely as a dental vet for the last 9 years, and receive surgical referrals from veterinarians all around the South Island. I have also visited many vet clinics around New Zealand giving in clinic training to upskill staff in the dentistry field, and given oral presentations to veterinarians at conferences and for the New Zealand Veterinary Association. However, although I am considered an “expert” in the field I am not a  dental specialist. There are now three animal dental specialists in New Zealand who all live in the North Island. They are Dr Russel Tucker (Auckland), Dr Crystal Loh (Waikato) and Dr Angus Fechney (Palmerston North).
